Alexandre Pantoja will be looking to defend his flyweight title for the third time on Sunday, having previously taken care of rising Australian star Steve Erceg to cement his position at the top of the division.

A series of impressive victories quickly earned Erceg a shot at champion, although this time Pantoja’s next challenger – Kai Asakura – is fighting for the title in his UFC debut.

The fight, which will be the main event on Sunday’s UFC 310 card, was not well received by some flyweight contenders, including New Zealand’s Kai Kara-France, who is coming off a TKO win over Erceg and since her loss to Pantoja has yet to fight him in The Ultimate Fighter.

“You have the wrong Kai,” Kara-France told Sky Sports NZ.

“After my fight I called for the title shot and thought, ‘Sweet, I did it,’ and then I heard they were bringing a guy from Japan and his name is Kai. Brother, he hasn’t even fought yet.

“I don’t think he deserves it. You have to at least prove your worth or do something for the guys who have fought the best in the UFC division for years.”

Former RIZIN champion Asakura (21-4 MMA) was given a title shot immediately after signing with the UFC and has vowed to “take over” the division.

“The UFC fans have never seen someone like me fight,” Asakura said.

“I always strive to achieve the knockout finish and I’m here to bring excitement back to the flyweight division.”

Elsewhere, there’s a lot at stake in the co-main event as Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Machado Garry meet in a welterweight title eliminator.
