Lena Waithe celebrates “Wicked” and Cynthia Erivo on Instagram

Lena Waithe celebrates Cynthia Erivo and her incredibly successful new film.

As Wicked: Part One Released in theaters last weekend, Waithe, 40, posted several photos, clips and articles highlighting Erivo’s acclaimed performance as Elphaba, Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West, in the Jon M. Chu-directed stage adaptation.

Erivo, 37, has shared behind-the-scenes glimpses of filming the new film starring Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and more via social media. Before and after the November 22 release, Waithe added many of these to her Instagram Stories, as well as rave film reviews and memes.

On Sunday, November 24th, it will take place Master of Nothing The Emmy winner supported the film by sharing reposts, including a choreographed video by members of Evilis the current Broadway production, an excerpt from a BBC interview with Karis Musongole, who plays young Elphaba in the film, and links to Erivo’s profiles in beings And Ebony Magazine.

Waithe didn’t just support the film on social media; At the Nov. 9 premiere in Los Angeles, she walked the red carpet in sunglasses and a striking green suit that would be right at home in the Emerald City. “Tonight we’re defying gravity,” she captioned an Instagram carousel of shots showing off the outfit.

Erivo and Waithe have spent time together at various events leading up to the box office hit’s release, including at the US Open Tennis Championships alongside Chu and Grande in September; at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Gala in October; and at the Tony Awards on June 16, where Erivo co-presented a category Evil‘s Broadway creator Idina Menzel.

On her Instagram Stories, Waithe posted some of the behind-the-scenes footage that 53-year-old Menzel recently shared from filming her cameo Wicked: Part One with Broadway co-star Kristin Chenoweth as well as composer Stephen Schwartz and author Winnie Holzman.

“The first time I met her was at the Met Gala, where all the cool kids get together,” Waithe said diversity in 2020 of the meeting with Erivo. You and them Harriet The Oscar nominees, she said at the time, “have just been in the mood ever since.”
