Wrexham saw off Barnsley in League One on Tuesday to secure their third win in a row. And, more importantly, Wrexham cemented their position in the automatic promotion places at the top of the table.

For a long time, despite the Red Dragons’ best efforts, it looked as if the game would end goalless. Until Oliver Rathbone’s goal in the second minute of added time secured a 1-0 win in a dramatic climax that sent the Racecourse Ground into delirium.

Rathbone’s 20-yard shot also caused unrest 5,000 miles from North Wales in Los Angeles, where the club’s co-owner, actor Rob McElhenney, watched the spectacle on the giant screen at the Cosm venue in Inglewood.

As unlikely as it may sound, the midweek third tier English Football League game between Wrexham and Barnsley was the subject of a “VIP spectator experience” hosted at the Cosm. The game was broadcast to a viewing party of hundreds of spectators, and McElhenney celebrated his team’s late goal with high fives, muscle flexes and fist pumps right in front of the venue’s immersive 87-foot-diameter 8K screen.

McElhenney attended alongside It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia co-stars Charlie Day, Danny DeVito, Glenn Howerton and Kaitlin Olson. Before the game, the gang met with some stars of the NFL team Los Angeles Chargers: running back Kimani Vidal, long snapper Josh Harris and kicker Cameron Dicker.

During the full-time stint, DeVito was spotted handing out celebratory high-fives to fans in the auditorium – a sight still hard to imagine for long-time followers of English lower-league soccer, nearly four years after McElhenney and the Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds completed their takeover.

The result saw Wrexham consolidate their position in second place in League One, just two points behind leaders Wycombe Wanderers, having played a game more than their title rivals.

If they were to finish the season there it would be enough to secure them their third consecutive promotion and take them from non-league to the second division championship in just three seasons.

Wrexham have seven league games remaining until January 4, as well as an EFL Trophy second-round tie against Crewe Alexandra. Given the success of Tuesday’s screening, perhaps we could soon see more EFL stars such as Burton Albion and Cambridge United treating Cosm as a watch party on the big screen.
