Hawks notes: Young, Daniels, Snyder, Johnson

Trae Young drew a historic conclusion in Friday’s overtime win over the Lakers, writes Lauren Williams of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Hawks Guard had 31 points, 20 assists and five three-pointers, becoming the first player since at least 1979-80 to reach those numbers in a single game.

He capped the evening with a game-winning three-pointer after being unexpectedly left wide open. Young passed the ball De’Andre Hunterwho had already taken five shots from distance, and when the defense turned him into double combinations, no one switched to Young.

“I think Trae read it well.” Hunter said. “He started attacking lightly. They both went with him. As he handed it to me, I saw them both rush towards me. So it was kind of a simple piece. Trae reads room. He was shooting all night long, so I was confident he could definitely do it.”

It was a welcome performance from Young, who has struggled with his shot for most of the season. Williams points out that since Oct. 27, he’s only shooting 37.5% from the field and 30.7% from distance as opposing teams have caught him or picked him up all over the court to get the ball out of his hands to press. As the roster gets healthier, Young expects to see a more open look and create more opportunities for his teammates.

“If you watched, we had a lot of guys in double figures.” he said. “So this wasn’t the first night it was like this. So we just have to keep going. Even in some of our losses, we had a lot of players score. So we just have to keep going. And now the boys are healthy. We found a little rhythm. We can’t get too high or too low at any moment.”

There’s more from Atlanta:

  • There is a lot of preparation going on Dyson Daniels“Disruptive defense,” Williams added in a separate story. The 21-year-old guard is having his best season in his first year with the Hawks, leading the league in steals by a wide margin and earning the Eastern Conference’s first-ever Defensive Player of the Month award. Daniels explained his intensive study of the players he has to protect. “One thing for me is I know where people need to get the ball to get power to go up.” he said. “So, a guy like Giannis (Antetokounmpo)for example, he caught me a few times (and) I missed it. But you have to get the ball across your body to develop your power. So if someone comes past me, there’s a big ball on the edge and they try the euro step, they’ll usually always bring the ball over their body to the left side. Then I can go through with it.”
  • The Hawks are on a five-game winning streak as a coach Quin Snyders The team’s vision is being realized, observes HoopsHype’s Cyro Asseo de Choch. Snyder emphasizes exploiting athleticism to score in transition, keeping the Hawks ranked eighth in the league in scoring and 11th in speed.
  • Jalen Johnson has been added to the Hawks’ injury report with right shoulder soreness, Williams tweets. He is considered questionable for Sunday’s game against Denver.
