Texas football loses to Georgia in the SEC championship game

ATLANTA – Looking for gold in its Southeastern Conference debut, Texas will have to settle for silver instead.

Trevor Etienne scored on a 4-yard run in overtime and Georgia beat Texas in the SEC championship game on Saturday. With the 22-19 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Georgia (11-2) secured its third conference championship under ninth-year coach Kirby Smart and a bye in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

Texas was attempting to become the first team to win the SEC title in its debut season since the conference’s inaugural season in 1933. Instead, Texas will have to wait to learn its CFP fate on Sunday. With an 11-2 record, Texas should be a contender for the playoffs and the Longhorns could even end up hosting a first-round game.

In the first quarter on Saturday, Texas receiver Matthew Golden converted four receptions for 107 yards. One of those catches was a 50-yard gain on a third down attempt that led to Bert Auburn’s 41-yard field goal and the game’s first points. Golden ended the first quarter by grabbing a jump ball over Georgia’s Daniel Harris, bringing UT to 32 yards on 3rd-and-14, and Auburn later kicked another field goal.

Georgia kicked its own field goal with 6:32 left in the second quarter. This was a win for the Bulldogs.

In the first half, Texas scored just six points despite reaching UGA’s 25-yard line three times and beating Georgia by a 260-54 margin. The Longhorns were also penalized eight times for 80 yards.

On the last play of the first half, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was injured by a sack by Trey Moore. This led to Georgia opening the second half with a backup quarterback and a scoring drive as Gunner Stockton led the Bulldogs on a 10-play, 75-yard possession capped by Etienne’s 10-yard run.

Georgia extended its lead on Peyton Woodring’s field goal in the third quarter, but a 41-yard touchdown catch by DeAndre Moore Jr. tied the game at 13:54. The two teams then traded field goals in the final five minutes – Woodring made a 21-yard kick with 4:32 left and Auburn made a 37-yard attempt with eight seconds left – to set up overtime.
