“This is dangerous and out of control”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Wednesday that the threats against President-elect Trump’s nominees and appointees were “dangerous and baseless” and called on President Biden and other Democratic Party leaders to address the incidents condemn.

“There have been not one, but TWO assassination attempts on President Trump this year,” Johnson said in a Wednesday post on the social platform about an incident at his Florida golf club in which agents foiled an apparent attempt on his life before shots were fired.

“Now some of his Cabinet nominees and their families are facing bomb threats,” he continued. “This is dangerous and out of control. “That’s not who we are in America.”

The spokesman added: “Joe Biden and all Democratic leaders have a duty to speak out now and condemn this.”

Johnson’s comments came as at least four officers reported bomb threats at their homes the day before Thanksgiving. Trump’s new press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed in a statement Wednesday that several of the president-elect’s nominees had been subjected to “slaps” and other threats.

“In response, law enforcement and other agencies acted quickly to ensure the safety of those targeted,” Leavitt said.

A spokesman for Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Trump’s pick as ambassador to the United Nations, said the lawmaker’s home was the target of a bomb threat.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said a similar threat was made Wednesday morning in Florida against former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) — who has withdrawn his name from consideration for attorney general. The sheriff’s office said Gaetz does not live there, but a family member does. No device was found and the area was cleared by authorities.

Former MP Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) said his family’s home was targeted by a pipe bomb threat that had a “pro-Palestinian message.” Zeldin, a former Jewish lawmaker whom Trump appointed to head the Environmental Protection Agency, said he and his family were not at the residence at the time of the threat.

Brooke Rollins, the president-elect’s pick for agriculture secretary, was also a target. Rollins reported online that she received a threat against her family and home in Texas. She added that Forth Worth police had cleared the area and she had been told she could return to her residence.

Late last year, several lawmakers said their homes were targeted by strokes on Christmas Day.
