Kirby Smart talks Georgia QB status

ATLANTA – Georgia football coach Carson Beck suffered an upper extremity injury in the SEC championship game against Texas on Saturday, according to coach Kirby Smart.

The injury occurred at the end of the first half of the game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the Bulldogs beat Texas 22-19 in overtime. More than half a dozen staff members rushed him onto the field after the game as he lay on his side on the turf.

The play resulted in a sack by Texas’ Trey Moore. Beck fumbled the ball and it spun around violently until it landed to offensive lineman Dylan Fairchild.

The location and extent of the injury were not specified by Smart. Upper extremity can mean finger, hand, arm, shoulder or elbow. Beck was seen on television in the third quarter with ice on his elbow.

Smart said Beck was unable to throw or even grab the ball when he was checked out in the locker room at halftime.

“It was a little painful for him,” Smart said. “We need to find out exactly what’s going on.”

To make a diagnosis, Beck will have an MRI carried out on Sunday at the earliest.

As a senior, and this will be his final SEC Championship Game should he become eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft, Beck returned to replace backup Gunner Stockton on the final play of the game and throw the winning touchdown to running back Trevor Etienne hand over .

Smart said Beck only did that because offensive coordinator Mike Bobo designed a good play based on a quick decision. Stockton had to leave the field because his helmet fell off on the previous play.
