Does Moana 2 have a post-credits scene?

Your child’s favorite girl scout, chief’s daughter and Polynesian princess is back in Moana 2, a sequel to the popular 2016 animated film. The Disney film takes Moana and Maui on another dangerous seaside adventure, with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will once again take on the roles of the title heroine and the selfish but lovable demigod.

Set three years after the pair’s first highly acclaimed collaboration (Moana was the most-streamed film of 2023 in the US according to Nielsen), “Moana 2” introduces new characters, including Moana’s younger sister Simea. Expect a new, ragtag crew, a massive storm, and the return of the menacing Kakamora as Moana seeks out an important, ancient island.

Originally conceived as a TV series, “Moana 2” is different from the upcoming live-action remake of the first “Moana,” which stars Johnson and is scheduled to hit theaters in 2026. The animated film features music by Opetaia Foaʻi, Mark Mancina and songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. If you’re thinking of “Moana” as a Thanksgiving week movie, here are the bonus scenes you can expect.

Spoiler alert

Moana 2 tasks its heroine with reaching the cursed island of Motufetu to reconnect the people of the ocean. It won’t be an easy task as she faces a brutal storm caused by the power-hungry god Nalo, intent on separating everyone from one another. Before being exposed to the foul weather, Moana and her sailor friends become stuck in a giant mollusk containing the mysterious (and seemingly villainous) figure Matangi.

Despite her bat-filled home and penchant for keeping demigods as prisoners, Matangi proves to be one of the good guys. She brings Moana and Maui back together so they can face the storm, and imparts some wisdom about “getting lost” – the gist is that as a wayfinder, Moana can find new ways forward instead of just relying on the familiar. Matangi helps the film’s heroes behind Nalo’s back and is involuntarily tied to their unattractive home.

Matangi’s advice proves useful and Moana eventually manages to reconnect the ocean. If you’re wondering what happened to the Bat Lady, you’ll have to wait until the mid-credits scene.

In this bonus sequence, the audience sees not only Matangi, but also Nalo, who is upset that Moana broke his curse. Matangi doesn’t do justice to her role, but things still don’t look good for her, as Nalo yells, “We’re just getting started.” Then, laughing evilly, one of the villains from the first Moana film comes into view: the scavenging crab Tamatoa . Nalo is not happy about this and knocks away the remains of his rusty collection of shiny things. However, that doesn’t stop Tamatoa from talking about himself and debuting a song called “Funky Crab Legs,” which you definitely won’t find on the Moana 2 soundtrack.
