College football conference championship week live – best moments, playoff appearances

It’s the final week of the 2024 college football season and several conference championship games have significant implications for the College Football Playoff.

Whether it’s a first-round bye, home playoff games or just a spot on the field, there’s a lot at stake in five championship games.

We’re tracking how each game impacts the CFP field:

Georgia clinched a playoff spot and a first-round bye as one of the committee’s four highest-ranked conference champions, but how far they advance could depend on who wins the Big Ten title game. If Oregon wins, Georgia would almost certainly get the No. 2 seed and the No. 2 seed, as the undefeated Ducks would retain the top spot in the standings and be seeded as Big Ten champions. However, if Penn State wins the Big Ten, there will be a debate in the committee boardroom about who should be the No. 1 seed. Penn State would have had its best win – against the top team in the country – but Georgia would have defeated the committee’s No. 2 team – twice. The other question in the committee room will be how far the Longhorns fall. Will they lose a place? Or fall behind Notre Dame with a loss? The difference is that it is the #5 or #6 seed. Both would still host a first round home game, only the group games would be different. The No. 5 seed plays the No. 12 seed in the first round. Texas would likely still stay ahead of Ohio State due to a common opponent in Michigan. Arizona State clinched a spot in the CFP with its convincing win over Iowa State, but still needs help to secure a first-round bye. If the Big Ten and SEC winners and Boise State, the Mountain West Conference champion, all honor their scheduled first-round byes, ASU will have to beat Clemson in the ACC championship game against SMU to clinch one of the bye spots, the to be assigned to the four highest-ranked conference champions. This assumes the selection committee would leave the Big 12 champion ahead of No. 17 Clemson — a likely scenario considering how well ASU has played and Clemson’s three losses. If ASU earns the No. 4 seed with a Clemson win, it would play the No. 12 vs. No. 5 winner. However, if SMU wins, Arizona State would likely receive the No. 11 seed and play the No. 6-seeded team. — Dinich
