“The business of basketball is unpleasant,” Celtics analyst and former player Eddie House said during NBC Sports Boston Pregame Live, describing the reality of the trade: here one day, gone the next.

For Marcus Smart it was a return to Boston on Saturday evening, where he was able to play for the first time since his departure. Smart traded in his blue Louis Vuitton washed jacquard suit from February for a Grizzlies uniform in a duo of Memphis blues.

Heading to Boston after a loss Tuesday night, Smart and his crew prepared for the cold weather and headed east.

“The ultimate Celtic,” announcer Drew Carter called Smart in the opening minutes of Saturday night’s game. The former guard was green and wore a dark lime hoodie with PUMA printed on the front.

Smart, who has been working with PUMA since 2019, released the latest product of their collaboration in October: the Genetics basketball shoe with a “player-exclusive” colorway that resembles a biological heat map – fitting for a player who has often been referred to as the “heart and heart.” Soul of Celtics basketball.

He paired the sweatshirt with a puffer jacket in his new home team’s colors, similar to this jacket on the PUMA website, created in collaboration with KidSuper, a designer known for playful design and community ethos.

As Smart was feted at the Garden just hours before his triumphant return to thunderous cheers from fans excited to see him back in action, he wore a well-known favorite designer and NBA mainstay.

He wore Louis Vuitton, no doubt this time, and featured additional green accents on the collar of the black jacket, worn in a color combination commonly seen in the tunnel.

In contrast to the Smart’s color mix, which also included a “light summer” blue Louis Vuitton dopp kit, the boys wore black.

Jayson Tatum put on a backwards hat and layered a long-sleeved white t-shirt under a black short-sleeved t-shirt and black pants. The rest of the team followed suit Jaylen Brown expressed his range in a cool, neutral palette that included brown, gray and a quick dash of white on his feet.

Blue, green, brown, white, black: In addition to an array of colors, the evening brought a range of emotions for Smart, who spoke with NBC Sports Boston sideline reporter Abby Chin about nostalgia.

“What’s it like coming back here now?”

“I won’t lie. “It’s a little strange… seeing everyone… familiar faces, just saying what’s going on… ‘Nice to see me’… ‘Welcome back’ and things like that,” Smart said of reuniting with former colleagues and friends.

“But it’s a great feeling. My time here was definitely an unforgettable time and it will always be a part of my life.”
