It’s a calm afternoon today ahead of a storm system that’s moving in this evening and will be with us throughout the day on Thanksgiving. Hopefully you were able to get to where you need to be for the holidays. Travel will be difficult, especially on Thursday afternoon, with a wintry mix possible for everyone and elevations above 1,000 feet of snow.

There will be snow and a wintry mix between 2 and 4 a.m. Thursday morning. A wintry mix is ​​expected to continue in the valleys until late morning or early afternoon before full snowfall begins. There may be a period of time where it switches back and forth, then there will be heavy wet snowfall. Snow will continue at elevations above 1,000 feet and will decrease between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The storm is currently raging in the middle of the country and will tap into Atlantic moisture. Although it doesn’t look like much at the moment, it will solidify significantly overnight tonight and into the day on Thursday.

Thursday morning starts off wet and snowing in the mountains with a wintry mix in the valley towns. Temperatures will be above 30°C and are likely to fall by the afternoon as rainfall intensity increases.

As mentioned above, temperatures in the Valley will be borderline this afternoon and we will likely see a mix of rain and snow. However, by late afternoon and early evening it should get cold enough to transition completely to snow. Snow accumulations are possible in the Hudson Valley at this time.

Just east of the Hudson River will see the least amount of snow as there will be some shade and temperatures may be a little too warm for snow to stick, 2 inches thick at best. 2-4″ for Albany West and into the Berkshires and Taconics, 4-8″ farther west and into the northern Berkshires and southern Vermont, there will be some areas of 8″-12″ through the high elevations of Schoharie County and to the north Berkshires and the backbone of the Green Mountains. North and west of Albany will be the “jackpot winners,” especially if we see banding form in the storm that will intensify locally and could result in more than 12 inches of snowfall.

We will be drying things towards the end of the week and into the weekend, with temperatures cooling down to 30°C over the weekend. There is a chance of snow showers early next week and temperatures will be much cooler, with highs in the upper 20s and lower 30s. I wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving! -Cap & Rob
