Liverpool vs Real Madrid: Arne Slot is happy to end the team’s fanaticism

Arne Slot celebrated Liverpool’s 2-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid by saying the Spanish giants had become a “disturbance in the A–” for the club after snapping a 15-year winning streak against reigning European champions had finished.

Second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo – Kylian Mbappé and Mohamed Salah were both denied by second-half penalties – sealed victory for Liverpool, who continued their 100 per cent successful start to the Champions League, giving Slot’s side a lead two points ahead of second-placed Inter Milan.

With Liverpool failing to beat Madrid in their last six meetings, including the 2018 and 2022 Champions League finals, Slot said it was important to finally beat the 15-time Champions League winners.

“You know how special it is to play against a team that has won the Champions League so many times,” said Slot. “They were also a nuisance for Liverpool for many years. It’s a big week and it’s pleasing to see that.”

“I think it’s always good to win a game and especially in a big game like this you know you’re up against so many good players.”

“But this is such a strange and different constellation in the Champions League and it is difficult to judge how important these victories are.”

“If we meet them (Madrid) in the round of 16 and can then beat them, that would be a bigger statement.”

Although they now have a five-point lead in the top eight that guarantees a place in the last 16, Slot said it was too early to say whether Liverpool had done enough to secure qualification.

“I didn’t have a timetable as far as how many points I wanted,” he said. “You want to implement the style of play as quickly as possible. This is not difficult because it was not that different from that of Jürgen (Klopp, his predecessor). It’s great to see that not only the regular players but also the new players are doing what we expect.

“If I had counted points before the season for this season point, I wouldn’t have achieved as much as I did now.”

Liverpool face Manchester City in the crucial Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday. Slot said it was “too early” to assess the extent of Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konaté’s injuries.

And the Liverpool boss said he will be supported by his family at the City clash following a visit from the Netherlands following his arrival from Feyenoord in the summer. “They took a few days off school to be here,” Slot said. “They will be here for Man City but it won’t affect the game!”

“Having family nearby is always a good thing because you don’t have to be focused for 24 hours… 18 hours maybe!”
