HOUSTON – The Texas Longhorns fell to Georgia in overtime in the SEC Championship game on Saturday night and now wait to find out where they are seeded in the College Football Playoff. This year, the College Football Playoff expanded from four teams since its inception to twelve teams.

When will the final CFP rankings be released?

You don’t have to wait much longer to find out which 12 teams are playing for the national title. These will be released on Sunday, December 8th between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Houston time.

How the College Football Playoff will work

The top five ranked conference champions automatically participate in the College Football Playoff. The seven best-placed teams remaining will fill out the group of twelve.

The top four teams receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Of the remaining teams, the higher ranked teams in each match will host the first round games. Here’s a look at how the first round matches stack up.

  • No. 5 vs. No. 12
  • No. 6 vs. No. 11
  • No. 7 vs. No. 10
  • No. 8 vs. No. 9

Once these games are over, there will be eight teams left. The next round – the quarterfinals – will be played in bowls with a rotating schedule.

This year, those quarterfinal games will be played in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl (December 31), Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (January 1), Prudential Rose Bowl (January 1) and Allstate Sugar Bowl (January 1). . .

Then the semifinal round, which includes the four remaining teams, will be played at the Capital One Orange Bowl (January 1) and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl (January 10).

The national title game is Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
