Red Sox see Slugger agree to huge deal with NL West team

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made it clear that he wanted to add a right-handed bat to a left-handed lineup in Boston this offseason.

Well, on Saturday night, one of the best right-handed options came off the table.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported shortstop Willy Adames agreed to a massive one Seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. According to Passan, the deal is still pending.

Adames had a career season with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024. He hit 32 home runs and collected 112 RBIs while batting .251 with 21 stolen bases. It was the second time in the last three seasons that Adames hit over 30 home runs in a season.

It’s hard to imagine Adames’ prowess remaining the same at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park in San Francisco. It appeared his swing would have been better suited to Fenway Park, and last month it was reported that the Red Sox had “strong interest” in the 29-year-old infielder.

According to Passan, the Giants have made Adames their top free agent priority, something the Red Sox clearly haven’t done as they are fully focused on the Juan Soto sweepstakes.

This is the second high-profile free agent in as many days that the Red Sox have been linked to but ultimately lost. The Red Sox reportedly made “serious pressure” on Shane Bieber before he decided to return to the Cleveland Guardians.
