PROWERS AND BACA COUNTIES, Colo. – A man jumped from a moving Greyhound bus and was struck by a tractor-trailer on US 287 early Thursday, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

Trooper Sherri Mendez, public information officer for CSP, said a few minutes after 4 a.m. Thursday, CSP received a call about an incident on U.S. 287 between Lamar and Springfield.

Mendez said CSP learned that a passenger on a northbound Greyhound bus jumped out of the vehicle while it was in motion and the person was then struck by a southbound tractor-trailer while on the roadway near milepost 68. The person was only identified as a man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, CSP said.

It is currently unknown why the man jumped from the bus, Mendez said.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the highway was closed in both directions between 1st Avenue near Springfield to the north and County Road CC5 near Lamar.

“The long stretch of road is closed as this area is mainly used by articulated lorries. This is intended to allow semi-trucks to stop and wait until the roadway reopens,” CSP said in a news release.

The road was reopened shortly before 10 a.m
