Tyler O’Neill joins Red Sox for Orioles on $49.5 million contract

Tyler O’Neill is leaving Boston but staying in the American League East.

The outfielder is heading south to Baltimore to join the Orioles on a three-year, $49.5 million deal. The Post’s Jon Heyman reported Saturday.

The deal includes an opt-out after the first season.

After two disappointing seasons in 2022 and 2023 to conclude his tenure with the Cardinals, O’Neill found his stride after a trade to the Red Sox last season.

The slugger hit 31 home runs with a .511 batting average in just 113 games as he missed time due to a concussion, knee inflammation and a leg infection.

In seven seasons in the major leagues, O’Neill hit .246/.322/.469 with 109 home runs and 278 RBIs.

With a career 133 OPS+ against southpaws, he is particularly strong against lefties.

For a right-handed hitter like O’Neill, it’s good news that the Orioles announced early in the offseason that the team plans to move the left field wall back closer to the ballpark’s original dimensions in 2025, after the team lowers the fence and moved higher inside in 2022.

O’Neill, a two-time Gold Glove winner, has the ability to play all three outfield positions, but he only played cornerback for Boston.
