College Football Playoffs: CBS Sports plans a 12-team CFP round after championship weekend

The College Football Playoff picture is crystal clear after conference championship weekend concluded on Saturday. So, CBS Sports writer Jerry Palm released its final predictions for the 12-team round, set to be announced Sunday afternoon.

Five teams secured their place in the CFP with their conference title wins: Arizona State, Boise State Clemson, Georgia And Oregon. Four of those teams will receive byes in the first round, while the fifth team will likely face the No. 5 seed in the first round.

The first round games take place on the campus of the higher seeded team. From there, the winners advance to their respective bowl games, leading to the national championship on Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Oregon defeated Penn State with a score of 45-37 on Saturday to win the Big Ten Championship and remain undefeated. The Ducks are the only team in all of college football that hasn’t lost this season and are the easy pick for the top spot.

Dillon Gabriel finished the game with 283 yards and three touchdowns and is a Heisman Trophy final candidate. He also considers Oregon the favorite to win the national championship in what is expected to be his final season.

Georgia has overcome an injury to its starting quarterback Carson Beck as a backup Shooter Stockton kicked in and led to a 22-19 overtime win Texas in the SEC title game. The Bulldogs won the game by a touchdown Trevor Etienne in overtime when Stockton completed all three of his passes and rushed for eight yards to set up Etienne’s overtime score.

This is Georgia’s fourth appearance in the College Football Playoff. It won the national championship in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but missed the CFP in 2023 after losing in the SEC Championship.

Boise State raced through the Mountain West en route to a 21-7 win against UNLV to win the championship title on Saturday. The Broncos’ only loss this season came against Oregon in Week 2, and they beat the Ducks all the way before losing 37-34.

Run back Ashton Jeanty will make them a difficult task for any opponent they face. He passed for 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns, ranking fourth all-time in receiving yards in a single season.

Arizona State won a commanding 45:19 against Iowa State to win the Big 12 Championship and secure its first College Football Playoff berth in program history. The Sun Devils had another big play with the running back Cam Skattebowho rushed for 170 yards and scored a total of three touchdowns.

After their win, there was some doubt as to whether they deserved to overtake Boise State and secure the final first-round bye as one of the four top-seeded conference champions. However, with Clemson cause a riot SMU In the ACC title game, both the Broncos and Sun Devils can likely expect to be in the top four.

Texas fell short in the SEC Championship Game but is still expected to make the field as an overall team. Palm projects them to be the No. 5 seed against a Clemson team that defied all odds to find its way into the bracket with a last-second field goal to win the ACC title 34-31 on Saturday.

The Tigers led SMU by 17 points early in the fourth quarter and nearly put the game away, but were able to hold their own at quarterback Cade Klubnik threw for 260 yards and four touchdowns. They will certainly come into this matchup hungry to continue their run in the postseason after many had already ruled them out.

This prediction from Palm could cause some controversy as he believes Alabama will face SMU as an overall team. This comes despite the fact that the Crimson Tide not only have more losses than the Mustangs, but also did not play in their conference championship game.

It’s hard to say whether the committee would actually exclude SMU, considering it is still capable of winning the ACC Championship. But at least in this prediction, the Crimson Tide win this comparison and face Big Ten runner-up Penn State.

This is an interesting potential intrastate matchup that would certainly generate a lot of intrigue in the first round. Notre Dame is the power in college football, but Indiana has been the Cinderella story so far this season, winning a program-record 11 games under its first-year coach Curt Cignetti.

Hoosiers QB Kurtis Rourke was after the transfer of electric Ohio and leads the Big Ten with 27 passing touchdowns and just four interceptions. However, it will be a tough game for him against a Notre Dame defense that ranks fourth in the country in passing.

Ohio State had a chance to play for the Big Ten Championship this weekend, but lost to its rival in the final game of the regular season Michigan. This resulted in the Buckeyes dropping from No. 2 to No. 6 in the CFP rankings and could still potentially face conference champ Oregon in the quarterfinals.

Palm expects Ohio State to face Tennessee in the first round, which would be just the second time in history that the two teams have met. The Vols finished the year 10-2 in their first season with Nico Iamaleava as their starting quarterback.
