Kirby Smart provides an injury update on QB Carson Beck

Georgia football scored a huge win over Texas in overtime of the SEC championship game, but at the cost of an injury to starting quarterback Carson Beck.

Luckily, Gunner Stockton was able to step in Beck’s place and help lead Georgia to victory in this game, but this team is at its best when Beck is in the game, and so his status will change over the next few weeks as we look ahead Georgia’s first college game awaits The football playoff game is much discussed.

And that discussion began Saturday night after Georgia’s win over Texas, when Kirby Smart provided an initial update on how Beck is doing.

“Yes, he has an upper extremity injury,” Smart said, via dawgnation.com. “We don’t know to what extent. Basically we looked at it there and it looked okay. But he had no grip strength and couldn’t throw the ball into the locker room. That’s why it was a bit painful. “So we need to find out exactly what’s going on and do an MRI to investigate.”

According to Smart, Beck was unable to grab or throw the ball in the locker room during halftime, which made his decision to roll with Stockton under center much easier. But as mentioned, Georgia needs Beck back if they want to have the best possible chance of winning a national championship, so his health is extremely important.

Smart also mentioned that Beck will have an MRI in the coming days to determine the severity of his injury.

One positive takeaway, however, is that Beck came on and replaced Stockton on the final play of the game as he had to sit out one play after his helmet came off. Even though Beck had trouble grabbing the ball during halftime, he was clearly able to grab the ball quite well on this final play.

Smart will certainly provide an update once Beck has his MRI, but hopefully Georgia’s time off until New Year’s Day will be enough time for Beck to get healthy and get back on the field because he gives UGA the best chance at getting one to win the state championship this season.
