Before the Cavs (17-1) get another chance in Boston on Dec. 1, they will have a home game against the Hawks. Cleveland continues to gain ground in the Central Division and is eight games ahead in the standings. With a two-game lead over the Celtics, they remain firmly at the top of the East.

With a new passion under first-year head coach Kenny Atkinson, Cleveland has captured the NBA’s attention with an offensive verve that had previously been missing.

The Cavs rank first in points per game and field goal percentage, including a league-leading 3-point percentage. Their defense has taken a step back but is still strong, ranking in the top 10 in points allowed per game and opponent field goal percentage.

Cleveland also has an average margin of victory of 12.3, leading the league.

Superstar Donovan Mitchell and resurgent point guard Darius Garland continue to shine in Cleveland’s backcourt. Mitchell is averaging 24.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 47% from the field. Garland posted 20.3 points, 6.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds and shot 48.8% from the field.

Power forward Evan Mobley and center Jarrett Allen patrol the paint on both sides of the ball. Mobley is averaging 17.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 56.3% from the field. Allen is averaging a double-double with 14.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 68.8%, the second-highest rate in the league.

They face veteran center Clint Capela, who is averaging a double-double of 11.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in his career (21 games) against the Cavs.

Backup shooting guard Ty Jerome continues his rise. He is averaging 12.6 points, 3.8 assists and 2.1 rebounds while shooting 59.7% from the field.

Cleveland is one of the cleanest teams in the league, ranking sixth in turnovers per game. They will look to sharpen the knife even further as the Hawks squad looks for consistency.

The Hawks (7-11) are three games behind but are coming off their biggest win of the season when they beat the Celtics 117-116 in Emirates NBA Cup group play on Nov. 12.

Superstar guard Trae Young is averaging 21.9 points, leads the league with 11.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds and is shooting 38.5% from the field. Young has posted below-average shooting performance so far, but the Hawks’ offense is much better when he’s on the court.

The Hawks have the ninth-best offense in the league, but are only 19th in field goal percentage. Defense has been a struggle overall as they rank 28th in the league in opponents’ points per game.

Rising guard Dyson Daniels posted 14.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists while shooting 45.1% from the field. Daniels’ defensive presence stands out with just over three steals per game.

Small forward Jalen Johnson is averaging 19.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 48.4% from the field. Small forward De’Andre Hunter is averaging 16.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 43.7% from the field.

Capela could be the difference for a Hawks team that was overtaken and defeated by the Dallas Mavericks in their last game. Capela is averaging 11.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 62.6% from the field.

Atlanta ranks 24th in turnovers, which could lead to a fast break clinic for a red-hot Cavs team that can score points on the fast break.
