Forecasters say major coastal storms are heading toward New York next week

NEW YORK CITY – New York City is expected to be hit by two storms in the first half of December, forecasters say.

First, forecasters are predicting a light wintry mix of rain, snow and wind gusts of up to 40 mph across the city starting Wednesday evening as a storm — which dumped more than a foot of snow in the hinterland — heads toward the city, losing moisture in the process .

Looking ahead, meteorologists are now also predicting that a major coastal storm could be heading toward the city next week.

Accuweather forecasters say this next storm would move up the Atlantic coast and hit New York starting December 9th.

With the storm still far away, there are many ways it could impact New York. However, Accuweather forecasters say the storm is expected to sweep along the coast, likely picking up moisture along the way, resulting in heavier rain and snow if it’s cold enough.

“The options for the storm as it approaches the coast range from developing into a strong nor’easter with significant travel disruptions to a weaker storm that simply races out to sea with minimal travel issues,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said .

As of Tuesday morning, Accuweather forecast a 55 percent chance of rain next Monday and Wednesday and a 60 percent chance of rain next Thursday. However, these numbers could change as the storm approaches.
