Grand Forks, N.D – Residents across North Dakota will experience a mix of calm weather this weekend, with Saturday bringing partly sunny skies and high temperatures between 35 and 43 degrees. However, conditions will change dramatically as winter weather returns late Sunday into Monday, potentially impacting traffic on major highways.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Forks, freezing rain is expected to develop after midnight Sunday, transitioning to snow early Monday morning. Gusty northwest winds gusting to 30 to 40 mph will bring blowing snow, reducing visibility and creating dangerous conditions on roads including Interstate 29 and U.S. Highway 2. Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary journeys from late Sunday to Monday morning.

A high pressure system is keeping the region warmer than average for now, with calm winds today and high temperatures around 40 degrees. Temperatures will drop to over 20°C overnight on Saturday. Freezing rain is possible early Sunday morning, followed by 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation through Monday.

Monday’s forecast calls for a sharp drop in temperatures, with highs around 20°C and wind chills in the single digits. Blowing snow could continue until midday Monday before winds ease in the evening. The rest of the week will remain cold but calmer, with mostly sunny skies on Tuesday and highs in the teens.
