Hamilton’s move from McLaren to Mercedes made little sense when it was confirmed after the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix. He traded regular winners for a team that was struggling to stay competitive even with Michael Schumacher at the helm. Many, including this author, questioned the logic behind such a move, but this victory in Hungary changed everything. Hamilton’s first victory for Mercedes came in the blistering heat of the Hungaroring. He converted pole position and beat Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen.

The pre-race story was dominated by the death of Niki Lauda, who had been instrumental in convincing Hamilton to move to Mercedes. The race itself developed into an intense battle until the checkered flag. Hamilton had to defend himself for 64 laps on the softer medium tire against Verstappen, who was on the hard tire. The Dutchman ran mirrors of Hamilton for most of the race but launched his attack on lap 76 but was defended resolutely by the Mercedes man who held on for his emotional victory.

One of Hamilton’s best wins, but also one that often goes under the radar as he lost the title to teammate Nico Rosberg that season. It was also overshadowed by a sensational drive from Max Verstappen, who came from behind to finish third. But that shouldn’t detract from Hamilton’s performance, who was exemplary at the front and kept his championship hopes alive.

Hamilton’s victory in front of the Tifosi was a typical pantomime. Before the race he had described the atmosphere at Monza as a “pit of snakes” and stood on the podium to boos as he almost ended Vettel’s title hopes. Hamilton, who started third, drove around the German in the second chicane, touched him and caused the German to spin. Then, with nine laps to go, he pulled off a fantastic overtaking maneuver on Räikkönen to secure victory.

With a master class in Istanbul, Hamilton equalized Michael Schumacher’s seven world championship titles. Hamilton’s intermediate tires were effectively slicks as he crossed the finish line as his tire management proved crucial.

A brilliant battle with Verstappen that laid the foundation for the 2021 season. It set the tone for the rest of their time as teammates, as Hamilton would win his second world title that season, his first with Mercedes.

One of, if not the most emotional of his 105 career wins. Hamilton crossed the finish line in tears after going winless for 945 days. Hamilton won the wet-dry race and set a new record for most F1 victories in a single Grand Prix. Incredibly, it was the 15th time he had been on the podium at his home race.

In the heat of the moment, attempting to extend Verstappen’s lead in the championship, Hamilton scored his best ever win in Brazil. In the sprint race he was given a grid penalty, which sent him to the back of the field before finishing fifth. A further penalty of five places for an engine part change meant he started the GP in tenth place. He got off to a sensational start, was in fifth place in as many laps and was second on the 19th lap. He ended up battling with Verstappen for a few laps before finally getting past the Red Bull to win and keep his title hopes alive.
