Russell Wilson doesn’t bask in big numbers: ‘I’m just focused on winning’

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson threw for 414 yards in his final game, the second most in his career. He also threw three touchdowns, an offensive performance that Pittsburgh is no longer accustomed to. But what ultimately matters to Wilson is that those 414 yards and three touchdowns led to a win. Whenever he gets the opportunity to acknowledge his achievement, he weaves it into a utilitarian story.

“I never really focus on yards. “I’m just focused on winning,” Wilson told reporters on the Steelers’ website on Thursday. “I just care about winning and what we do and how we do it and how we get there. And obviously when your guys make plays like that, you have a better chance of winning, so we have to do everything we can every day to do our best and help this team win.”

Last Sunday, the Steelers needed Russell Wilson to throw for 414 yards and three touchdowns. It was only the third time in his career that he threw for more than 400 yards, but what matters is that he did what he had to do.

“That’s all I focus on every day, and so it’s not about the personal side or what we can accomplish,” Wilson said, referring to individual statistics about the Steelers’ record. “I’ve been able to accomplish a lot of great things along the way, but the one thing that keeps me busy and focused on is us achieving our ultimate goal, and that’s winning the Super Bowl.”

Since Russell Wilson took over in Week 7, the Steelers are 5-1 and 9-3 this season. He completed 123 of 187 passes for 1,626 yards with 10 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The Steelers have had their ups and downs since he took over the offense, but overall his presence has allowed them to take their passing game to new levels.

Wilson is a player who arrived with a long resume before suiting up for the Steelers. He already has one Super Bowl title, although he has long sought his second. In addition to over 45,000 career passing yards, he has 344 passing touchdowns. His 40 game-winning drives are also among the elite in NFL history.

At the end of the day, however, the Steelers brought in Russell Wilson to do whatever was necessary to bring about the win. Whether that means managing the game one week or scoring five touchdowns in another, that’s why he’s currently in the Black and Gold category. Of the options available, he had the best chance of meeting expectations.

And by and large he’s done that so far, but some of the biggest tests are yet to come. After the “revenge” game against the Browns, Wilson and the Steelers get the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs. Chances are he’ll have to throw several yards in at least one of them to win. And when he does, he’ll only talk about how great it was to win, not about the 400-plus yards.
