Bettor places the biggest NFL bet of the year: $3.1 million on the Eagles-Panthers game

The NFL is king when it comes to sports betting, and one bettor in Kentucky put a lot of faith in Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

On Thursday afternoon, Circa Sports reported that there was a $3.1 million bet on the Eagles’ moneyline (ML) against the Carolina Panthers. The bet was placed at odds of -700, meaning the bettor will win approximately $442,850 if the Eagles win the game outright.

The bet is the largest NFL bet this season, one of the largest reported bets ever at a U.S. legal sportsbook, and is believed to be the largest ever at Circa Sports, a sportsbook that is responsible for this is known to appeal to more sophisticated bettors and have higher limits.

Derek Stevens, owner of Circa Sports, first reported on the bet on “VSiN PrimeTime” Thursday night, noting that the sportsbook increased the Eagles’ ML to -870 and the Panthers’ ML to +650 for Carolina action to attract. As of Friday afternoon, the Eagles were the game’s favorites by 13.5 points, according to sportsbooks, which generated plenty of betting.

“(Carolina-Philadelphia) is our highest-stakes game of the weekend, and Philly was largely one-way traffic, with 70 percent of the handle on the spread and 80 percent on the moneyline,” said Adrian Horton, director of North American sports trading for ESPN BET, tells The athlete in an email. “The Eagles are our highest-stakes selection, both in terms of tickets and name. As far as the spread goes, we opened the game at -12.5 and it’s still trending towards the Eagles, now at -13.5 on Friday.”

The Eagles ML was the highest-stakes moneyline bet of all Week 14 NFL games at DraftKings Sportsbook, and 97 percent of bets and total stakes on the Carolina-Philadelphia ML were on the Eagles at DraftKings.
