Randy Moss receives support from the ESPN NFL team due to health issues

The Sunday NFL Countdown team opened this weekend’s edition with well-wishes to colleague Randy Moss, who retired from ESPN on Friday to address an undisclosed health issue.

Before the show officially began on Sunday, host Mike Greenberg and panelists Rex Ryan, Alex Smith, Tedy Bruschi and NFL insider Adam Schefter all took a moment to offer thoughtful remarks to the 47-year-old NFL Hall of Famer.

“We start with a word about our friend and teammate Randy Moss, who, as you may have heard, is retiring for a while to take care of his health. “Randy, we send you and your family all our love today and every day and can’t wait for you to be back where you belong,” host Mike Greenberg opened Sunday’s show.

Moss, who joined ESPN as an NFL analyst in 2016, first gave a health update and asked for prayers on the Dec. 1 show.

“I just wanted to let viewers know that me and my wife, me and my family are struggling with something internally,” said Moss, who also posted a social media video that conveyed a similar message.

“I have some great doctors around me. I couldn’t miss the show. I wanted to be here with you. I feel great.

“But when you all see me with these Michigan turnover glasses that I have on, that’s no disrespect because I’m on TV, man. I’m fighting something. I need all the prayer warriors.”

Days later, ESPN announced that Moss was “stepping down for an extended period of time to focus on a personal health challenge.”

“For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, bringing Countdown forward with his insight and passion. He has ESPN’s full support and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready,” the network said in a statement Friday.

Moss’ “Sunday NFL Countdown” teammates shared that sentiment.

“Randy, we love you, man, and we can’t wait for you to get back,” Smith said on Sunday’s show. “We know you’re in good hands and that you’re going to kick some ass.”

Bruschi added that he spoke to Moss this week and said, “They said, ‘Bru, you’ve got a show to do with all these guys.’ We’ll do it the best we can without you. You know we love you, Moss.”

Greenberg ended the touching section by suggesting that Moss was listening from a distance.

“Right now we know he’s watching and screaming, ‘Guys, come to the show!'” Greenberg said as the crew focused on the Week 14 slate.

Moss went on X when the show aired on Sunday and posted: “I love my teammates and my fans!! #SKOL”

A six-time Pro Bowler, Moss is considered one of the best receivers to ever play the game, earning four first-team All-Pro honors over the course of 14 seasons.

He played for the Vikings – who selected him 21st overall in the 1998 NFL Draft – the Raiders, Patriots, Titans and 49ers.
