3 observations after Maxey’s first triple-double, Embiid’s huge quarter leads Sixers over Bulls – NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Sixers are now 1-0 when their three stars play a full game together.

The team’s two returning All-Stars both had great performances Sunday in Chicago, leading them to a 108-100 victory.

In his 282nd career NBA game, Tyrese Maxey recorded his first triple-double with 25 points, a career-high 14 assists and a career-high 11 rebounds.

Joel Embiid returned after being sidelined for seven straight games with left knee problems and posted 31 points and 12 rebounds.

Paul George and Kelly Oubre Jr. added 12 points each.

With a fourth win in their last five games, the Sixers improved to 7-15. Chicago fell to 10-15.

The Sixers will have plenty of time to rest and practice before their next game, which is Friday night in Philadelphia against the Pacers. Here are observations from their win over the Bulls:

Tale of two quarters

Embiid missed three points on the Sixers’ first two possessions. He is now 3-for-23 (13.0 percent) from beyond the arc for the season.

It was pretty obvious that Embiid hadn’t played in over two weeks. He committed an early turnover when he seemed to expect George to make a cut, and the 34-year-old wing wasn’t on the same page. Embiid kept missing jumpers and started 0-for-7 from the field. His movements generally didn’t seem smooth or confident, although he ended his first stint running back on defense and blocking a layup from Coby White.

Chicago took advantage of Embiid’s poor start and took a 33-23 lead when the Whites beat the buzzer.

Embiid kicked into a much, much higher gear in the second quarter and looked like the player who averaged 34.7 points last season. He got into the game by sinking a turnaround jumper over Nikola Vucevic with 9:52 left in the second quarter. A midfield goal with 3:12 left in the second period brought Embiid to 19 points.

Maxey assisted him six times during that dominant run, feeding Embid for a pick-and-roll layup and throwing plenty of pocket passes. Embiid was also sharp in the post and even did a little damage in transition, finishing effectively against smaller players a few times early in the shot clock.

All told, the Sixers outscored the Bulls by 22 points in their brilliant second quarter and took a 62-50 lead into halftime.

The Sixers get smaller in the second half

The Sixers started the night with Maxey, Oubre, George, Guerschon Yabusele and Embiid.

Jared McCain (11 points, four assists, three steals) replaced Yabusele at the start of the third quarter. This move made sense considering Chicago hadn’t used a power forward and the Sixers had underperformed in the first few minutes of the game.

George played alongside four substitutes late in the first quarter. He didn’t put up big numbers on Sunday, but George’s decision-making was good in various lineups. In the second quarter, he assisted on a wide-open McCain three-pointer with a nice skip pass late in the shot clock.

The Sixers used a 10-man rotation, which again did not include Ricky Council IV or Eric Gordon. While Sixers head coach Nick Nurse selected Yabusele as his backup center, Andre Drummond remained on the bench in the second half.

Kyle Lowry had 12 minutes and three points on 1-for-3 shooting, scoring his first points since Nov. 15.

KJ Martin remained an important part of the Sixers’ rotation. Going 3-for-3, Martin is 12-for-13 from the field in his last two games. He played key minutes in the fourth quarter and chased down a key offensive rebound.

An all-rounder Maxey day

Embiid’s mid-range jumpers were almost automatic at the start of the third quarter.

Maxey called for a dribble handoff with Embiid, allowing him to attack Vucevic from the middle of the court several times before Chicago adjusted. The 23-year-old’s assists weren’t just a byproduct of Embiid’s hot shooting streak. He read the game well, increased his aggression in the third quarter and scored a dozen points.

Maxey was one of several Sixers who had productive days with the team. The Sixers scored the first 19 second-chance points of the afternoon, including a Maxey three-pointer that extended the team’s lead to 79-60.

However, the Bulls kept the game interesting until the last minute. Jalen Smith beat the buzzer in the third quarter with a heave across half the court and the Sixers’ offense stalled early in the fourth quarter. Both Maxey and the team shot 25 percent from three-point range on the day. Maxey is 5-for-33 (15.2 percent) on three-pointers in his last four games.

Ultimately, Maxey and Embiid delivered in the home stretch and the Sixers sealed the deal. In a highlight sequence, Embiid drew a double team and passed to Maxey, who made a quick pass that set up Oubre for the game-winning corner three.

The icing on the cake for Maxey’s performance was a defensive rebound with just under a minute left to complete his triple-double. He didn’t have to do anything unusual to reach the milestone on a true all-rounder day.
