Alabama Football will play a CFP rematch in the ReliaQuest Bowl after declining to make the playoffs

Alabama Football did not make the 12-team College Football Playoff and was eliminated from the group in favor of SMU. However, there is still one more game on the schedule for the Crimson Tide.

Kalen DeBoer’s team will play in the ReliaQuest Bowl, the game has been officially announced. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy first reported the news on Sunday after the CFP selection committee released the playoff round.

The Citrus Bowl received its first pick from the non-playoff SEC team, selecting South Carolina to face Illinois in Orlando.

Afterwards, the SEC chose its representative for six games, including the ReliaQuest Bowl. The game will be played on December 31st.

Alabama plays Michigan in the game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The Wolverines enter the bowl with a record of 7-5 and 5-4 in Big Ten play.

UM beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl, a CFP semifinal, last year. The Wolverines went on to win the national title.

The Crimson Tide were in the race for a spot in the playoffs until the end. Alabama likely would have been there if SMU had beaten Clemson in the ACC championship game or been eliminated by the Tigers.

Instead, the Mustangs fought back from a big deficit and only lost on a last-second field goal. The effort was enough to catapult them into the playoffs.

“We looked at the number of wins Alabama had against ranked opponents,” CFP selection chairman Warde Manuel said on ESPN. “We looked at SMU’s schedule. They were undefeated in the conference. Their losses came against ranked teams. But we also looked at Alabama’s losses to unranked teams. It was quite a debate.”

The ReliaQuest Bowl is scheduled for December 31st at 11 a.m. CT in Tampa. It will air on ESPN.
