The Jets are eliminated from the playoff race due to a crushing OT loss to the Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Another miserable loss in another miserable Jets season.

This week, the Jets blew an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter and lost 32-26 to the Dolphins in overtime.

There wasn’t much excitement left, but this loss officially eliminates the Jets from playoff contention, reducing them to 3-10 on the year.

While fans may be happy about the draft pick positioning, it will anger Jets players and coaches. They played their best game of the year for three quarters, then saw the game slip away in the fourth quarter, only to regain the lead, only to see the Dolphins tie the game in the final minute and win it in overtime .

The Jets took a 26-23 lead with 52 seconds left in the game on a 42-yard field goal by Anders Carlson. But then Malik Washington returned Carlson’s kickoff 45 yards to the Miami 46-yard line. The Dolphins gained 20 yards in six plays and Jason Sanders kicked a 52-yard field goal to tie the game 26-26 with seven seconds left in regulation.

The Dolphins won the coin toss to start overtime and gained 70 yards in eight plays. Tua Tagovailoa hit tight end Jonnu Smith for a 10-yard touchdown to end the game.

This was the Jets’ fourth straight loss and ninth in ten games. This is their ninth straight loss in Miami.

For most of the day, it felt like the Jets were going to take the game. Rodgers had 339 yards passing, the first time he has thrown for 300 yards since 2021. Garrett Wilson (114 yards) and Davante Adams (109) both had big games. The Jets scored on their first five possessions of the game (not counting a kickoff return that ended the first half).

The Jets trailed 15-13 at halftime after allowing a 57-yard field goal from Sanders at the end of the half. But Rodgers and the Jets took off early in the second half, and he led them with a seven-play, 70-yard touchdown drive to take a 20-15 lead. Later in the third quarter, Carlson hit his third field goal of the day to extend the lead to 23-15.

The Jets defense allowed four points in the first half but toughened up in the third quarter, forcing the Dolphins’ first two punts of the game.

Miami rallied with a nine-play, 60-yard drive in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Jets cornerback DJ Reed was called for a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 23 yards to the Jets’ 8-yard line. The Jets stuffed the Dolphins on third down from the start, but Tagovailoa hit Tyreek Hill on fourth-and-4 for a touchdown with 9:04 to play. Hill was paired with Jets safety Chuck Clark on the play and shook him to get open. The Dolphins tied the game at 23-23 thanks to a two-point conversion pass from Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle.

The Jets took the lead with a three-pointer on their next possession, their second of the fourth quarter, after not having to punt in the first three quarters.

The Dolphins failed to move the ball on their next possession, marred by a holding penalty that ultimately led to a punt.

Miami opened the game with an eight-play, 70-yard drive that looked like they were going to have an easy day against the Jets’ defense. De’Von Achane scored a two-yard touchdown to give the Dolphins a 6-0 lead. The Jets responded with an 11-play drive of their own that ended with a Carlson field goal that cut the lead in half.

Sanders gave Miami a 9-3 lead with a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter.

The Jets reached the end zone when Isaiah Davis scored his second touchdown in as many weeks, this time on a 17-yard run by the rookie. Both Davis and Braelon Allen had a big impact in the passing game with Breece Hall sidelined with a knee injury.

The Davis touchdown was the Jets’ first touchdown at Hard Rock Stadium since 2021. They were shut out last year and only made two field goals in the 2022 game. The result gave the Jets a 10-9 lead. Two more Sanders field goals and a Carlson field goal made it 15:13 at halftime.
