Seahawks top RB Kenneth Walker (calf) is out against the Cardinals

The Seattle Seahawks will be without Kenneth Walker in their NFC West showdown against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday after their leading rusher was sidelined with a calf injury.

Walker was initially listed as questionable because of calf and ankle injuries that kept him from practice on Thursday and Friday. The team demoted Walker to the loss on Saturday, citing only the calf injury as the reason.

Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Walker did not suffer a setback this weekend and has a chance to return next Sunday against the Packers.

Seattle has cut running back George Holani from its practice squad to improve backfield depth behind Zach Charbonnet and Kenny McIntosh. Charbonnet, who made two relief starts earlier this season while Walker was sidelined with an oblique injury, will once again lead Seattle.

The Seahawks also signed reliever Ty Zentner from their practice squad on Saturday and placed cornerback Tre Brown (hamstring) on their injury report as questionable. Seattle signed Zentner on Friday as Michael Dickson continues to battle a back injury that kept him from punting late last week in Seattle’s win over the New York Jets.

Coach Mike Macdonald said Friday that Dickson is expected to be available Sunday, but Zentner is a backup in case Dickson’s back jams up again.

Walker handled his usual workload of snaps and touchdowns against the Jets last week, but then showed up on the injury report as limited on Wednesday.

“From what I understand, he came out of the game well,” Macdonald said. “Some of these things come up later. It’s going to be kind of unconventional, so to my knowledge I don’t think he was limited as the game went on.”

Holani, an undrafted rookie out of Boise State, also gives the Seahawks another option in the return game. The Seahawks moved on from their two primary returners this week, without Laviska Shenault Jr. and Dee Williams after losing a fumble each on kickoff returns against the Jets.

Seattle claimed returner Jaelon Darden off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. He returned the most punts in his career, while Holani returned punts in college. Macdonald said wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a punt return option and that Charbonnet could return kickoffs. McIntosh and receiver Cody White also have experience returning kickoffs.

“I just can’t give you an answer right now because there are things we don’t know right now so we’re trying to figure that out, but we did it, the guys practiced it,” Macdonald said. “…We have a good plan, we’re just not sure who’s going to be out there right now based on the people available and all that kind of stuff.”

The Seahawks (7-5) are looking to maintain their one-game lead in the NFC West. According to ESPN Analytics, they enter Sunday’s game against Arizona (6-6) with a 38% chance of winning the division. This would increase to 63% in a win and drop to 20% in a loss.
