Trent Williams and Nick Bosa are out as the Niners await the Bears

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the third straight game, the San Francisco 49ers will be without star left tackle Trent Williams as he continues to recover from a left ankle injury.

The Niners officially ruled out Williams on Friday before their game against the Chicago Bears.

And on Saturday they lost another star for Sunday’s game when they waived defensive end Nick Bosa, who did not practice this week as he recovered from left hip and oblique injuries and was listed as doubtful on Friday was.

Safety George Odum (knee), linebacker Dre Greenlaw (Achilles tendon) and running back Jordan Mason (ankle) are also out, as is guard Aaron Banks (concussion), who was demoted Saturday. Odum and Mason were both placed on injured reserve.

The 49ers struggled mightily without Bosa and Williams, arguably two of the league’s best players at their positions and undoubtedly two of the most difficult players on the team to replace.

Since Williams arrived via trade in 2020, San Francisco is 49-28 when he plays and 3-8 when he doesn’t. Since Bosa arrived in 2019, the Niners have a record of 62-28 when he plays and 5-12 when he doesn’t play.

Jaylon Moore will start in place of Williams for the third consecutive season. Sam Okuayinonu and Yetur Gross-Matos are expected to fill the void for Bosa.

While the 49ers will once again be without key starters, they do have some key players back at full strength. Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir will play against Chicago after missing last weekend’s loss to the Buffalo Bills due to a knee injury. It has no game name.

The same goes for quarterback Brock Purdy, who returned from a sore right shoulder against the Bills and participated fully in practice all week.

“He’s good,” Shanahan said. “We had to wait a while to give it rest to make sure it healed and we saw that at the end of last week. There were no problems on Sunday and he was great all week. So I’m happy to have him back.” to go full speed and train for a whole week.

Also on Saturday, safety Talanoa Hufanga (wrist) was placed on injured reserve after his practice window opened this week.
