Georgia WR target, Auburn QB threat, Miller Moss favorite

While we still wait for the final decision on the College Football Playoff field, the transfer portal is about to open and movement into the portal has already begun. Even in the postseason, there will be a flurry of activity in the transfer portal, with players like Jackson Arnold, Conner Weigman, Nic Anderson and many others already entering the portal and perhaps more to come.

But let’s dive into some of the latest college football transfer portal rumors for Georgia, Auburn and many other programs to see where the wind is currently blowing early in the transfer market.

There’s been a lot of talk about quarterback Carson Beck’s inconsistent play this season for the Georgia Bulldogs. While the signal transmitter is at least partially to blame, it is also important to note that this is not the entire problem. If you look a little deeper, the Georgia wide receiver corps has let its quarterback down quite often this season. Drop issues, separation issues, and a general lack of decision makers in this position group were all evident.

Kirby Smart, unsurprisingly, appears to be well aware of this and is already working to correct it in the transfer portal for the 2025 Georgia squad. Not only did the Bulldogs land 5-star player Talyn Taylor, but the program is also reportedly in the mix for the top receiver currently in the portal, former Kentucky pass catcher Dane Key.

According to Pete Nakos of On3 ($), Georgia is expected to be one of the programs in the mix for Key, who registered 715 yards on 47 catches for the Wildcats last season and had over 1,800 receiving yards in three seasons in Lexington. The former 4-star could have a big breakout if he finds himself at a position with better QB play and a more pass-heavy offense.

Given Georgia’s receiver woes combined with the looming losses of Dominic Lovett and Arian Smith, it would be surprising if Key was the only receiver the Dawgs pursued in the transfer portal.

Whenever former 5-star Oklahoma quarterback and signal caller Jackson Arnold entered the transfer portal, one of the most obvious connections was Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers. With a change of scenery and an offensive-minded head coach, we could see Arnold begin to reach his potential.

However, there could be a dark threat to the Tigers in the portal. While On3’s Pete Nakos ($) reported that Auburn is actually among the teams already interested in Arnold, there’s a chance the former 5 star could end up with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. While Mississippi State finished the 2024 season in the basement of the SEC, former Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who recruited Arnold to the Sooners, is now the head coach in Starkville.

Nakos made it clear that the Bulldogs are not the best option in this equation, and perhaps not even the top Bulldogs, as Georgia is also looking for a possible replacement for Carson Beck. However, losing to Arnold would be a far bigger blow for Auburn as they move into a post-Payton-Thorne world but also likely need a gap before handing the keys over to prized recruit Deuce Knight.

However, Freeze and the Tigers expect to work with just about every top quarterback in the transfer portal. While Arnold should probably be at the top of their wish list, landing somewhere else wouldn’t be the end of the list for the position.

Lincoln Riley’s decision to bench Miller Moss in favor of Jayden Maiava late in USC’s season set the stage early for the quarterback. Now that Moss is officially entering the transfer portal, he fits the bill as a potentially lower-level player than the likes of Arnold and Weigman, but as someone who, with the right fit, could improve a program that needs such things at quarterback.

So it’s not shocking at all that the Louisville Cardinals are considered the early favorites to sign Moss in the transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Since returning to his alma mater, we’ve seen head coach Jeff Brohm utilize the portal extensively, particularly at quarterback. Jack Plummer led Louisville to the ACC Championship Game in 2023 before Tyler Shough also took over for a strong 2024 season. Moss would fit in very well with the recent transfers at this position.

Louisville won’t get Moss without competition, though, although Nakos also notes that he expects the Cardinals to move quickly, which could mean an early, aggressive play for Moss.

However, Nakos later reported that Eli Drinkwitz and the Missouri Tigers are also expected to pursue Moss in the transfer portal. With Brady Cook set to leave the program and Mizzou coming off a subpar year compared to expectations (even going 9-3 overall) to start the season, having a steady force like Moss in the mix could be very helpful Buildings to have Let the arrow point upwards again in Columbia.

However, given the reported interest and what we’ve seen so far from Brohm’s program and roster makeup with the Cardinals, the smart money would still be on Louisville for now.
