All aboard! Season 2 of 1923 is finally here and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look!

fans of the Yellowstone The prequel series’ second season follows Jacob and Cara Dutton back to the Dutton ranch as “a cruel winter brings new challenges and unfinished business.”

“With harsh conditions and enemies threatening to end the Dutton legacy, Spencer embarks on an arduous journey home, racing against time to save his family in Montana,” the official log continues. “Meanwhile, Alexandra sets out on her own harrowing transatlantic journey to find Spencer and win back her love.”

1923 The film stars Harrison Ford as Jacob, an ancestor of the character played by Kevin Costner in the current series. With his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) by his side, the series follows the Duttons as they navigate the hardships of the era, including Western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression.

In addition to Ford and Mirren, season two will see the return of Brandon Sklenar, Michelle Randolph, Jerome Flynn, Aminah Nieves, Julia Schlaepfer, Brian Geraghty, Timothy Dalton, Sebastian Roché, Robert Patrick, Darren Mann and Isabel May.

Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton, tells PEOPLE about his experiences working with Ford and Mirren and the unspoken guidance he received from both.

“I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily advice that they gave me, but more of an observation, and I think that’s one of the biggest factors in their perseverance and their ability to have such incredible careers over and over again This is largely due in part to who they are as people,” says Sklenar.

For Sklenar, 34, it was a thrill to get back on set and get into character, he says. “Knowing where the show was going and the anticipation of filming those pages and the anticipation of filming the entire season was a great feeling for me.”

“Knowing that I was going to do what the little kid in me, the actor in me is — I was over the moon,” he continues.

Sklenar previously teased that the Season 2 finale is “one of the best things I’ve read in my life,” as he said Forbes in August: “I can say with certainty that it will be absolutely incredible.”

“I knew from day one how it was going to end – Taylor (Sheridan) kind of told me. I knew the plot of Spencer from day one, so when filming the first part, you have to pay attention to where he has to go. I’m really excited.
