3 – Allen delivers a historic game despite defeat

Josh Allen had a performance for the ages as he became the first player in NFL history with 3 pass TDs and 3 rush TDs in a regular season game. His 6 total TDs are the most by an NFL player this season.

However, Allen joins some unfortunate company as he becomes only the 8th NFL player ever to score 6 or more touchdowns and still end up on the losing side. Oddly enough, the last time this happened was five years ago to the day (December 8, 2019), when Saints QB Drew Brees had 6 touchdowns in a 48-46 loss to the 49ers.

Allen tied Tom Brady and Drew Brees (9) for the most games ever with 3+ passes and 1+ rushing TD. He also recorded his fifth game with 2+ passing TDs and 2+ rushing TDs, surpassing Steve Young for the most in NFL history.

McDermott described Allen’s play as “unbelievable” but added: “We have to do a better job around him.”

In addition to Allen’s outstanding day, the Bills also had outstanding performances from their pass catchers. RB Ty Johnson had a career TD reception of 41 yards, WR Amari Cooper had 95 yards (the most since joining BUF), WR Khalil Shakir led the team with 106 yards, and WR Mack Hollins posted one year a career high for TDs on a season (5).

Allen said he will focus this week on finding ways to get the offense into a rhythm early in the game. The Bills only had 14 of their 42 points in the first half.

“We have to find ways to score before halftime and score after halftime, so we didn’t do our part,” he said. “I just tried to go out there and execute the play call as best as I could, and we didn’t do that well enough tonight.”
