The Chiefs win the AFC West for the ninth consecutive time after hitting a game-winning field goal

The Kansas City Chiefs are your AFC West winners for the ninth consecutive season as they defeated their division opponent, the Los Angeles Chargers, with a game-winning field goal.

The 19-17 victory moved the Chiefs to 12-1 on the season, which was a big win that not only clinched the division but also closed the gap on the Buffalo Bills for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The Chargers are now 8-5 on the season as they remain in the hunt for a playoff spot with four games left.

This low-scoring game featured a long drive by Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ offense that lasted 8:29 of the fourth quarter, but it ended with a field goal to make the score 17:16.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense had more than enough time to respond, and as we’ve seen too many times to count, that’s exactly what happened at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

On 3rd-and-10 of the ensuing drive, Mahomes escaped the Chargers’ pressure and found rookie receiver Xavier Worthy for a 14-yard strike, returning the ball and securing it to extend the drive.

A Mahomes scramble and a pair of runs from Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt continued to stir up yards and clock as the Chiefs neared the end zone for kicker Matthew Wright, who was perfect with three field goals, including a 50-yarder he enters the game winner.

CHIEFS’ TRAVIS KELCE IS TERRIBLE FOR NOT SCORING THIS SEASON: ‘FRUITTING FUCKING’

On 3rd-and-7 from the Chargers’ 20-yard line, it was essential for Los Angeles to stop the Chiefs to force the field goal and give Herbert another chance to score a game-winning drive of his own.

But Mahomes’ magic was on display again when he rolled out of the pocket, missed a tackler and threw the ball to Travis Kelce for a first down.

That allowed the Chiefs to run down the clock until the end of the fourth quarter, where Wright knocked the ball away from the left post from 31 yards out, but it was just enough to get three points and the win.

“Doink for the division!” NBC play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico yelled from the broadcast booth.

It took a while for anyone to find the end zone in this game, but it finally happened just before halftime when DeAndre Hopkins caught a short pass from Mahomes and fired it in from nine yards out to make it 13-0.

The Chargers, playing without Herbert’s loyal rookie Ladd McConkey, failed to get going with five straight punts in the first half.

However, they turned things around in the second half with back-to-back touchdown attempts, turning this game into a true AFC West battle.

First, it was the opening drive of the second half when Herbert analyzed the Chiefs’ defense over 13 plays, with Gus Edwards, who took over the starting role after the injured JK Dobbins, scoring from three yards out.

Then, after forcing a three-and-out from the Chiefs, Herbert needed just four plays to finally find Quentin Johnston for the four-yard score and a 14-13 lead.

But when Mahomes and the Chiefs have the ball at the end of a close game this season, it just hasn’t worked out for the opponent.

Mahomes was 24 of 37 for 210 yards with his only touchdown pass and rushed for 17 yards in the win. Pacheco, who played more of a leading role after recovering from injury.

For the Chargers, Josh Palmer rushed for a game-high 78 yards on six catches, while tight end Stone Smartt, who played a larger role during the game due to Will Dissly’s injury, rushed for 54 yards on three catches. Johnston also had 48 yards on five receptions.
