Golden State ends the Timberwolves’ series and Anthony Edwards falls silent

SAN FRANCISCO – Anthony Edwards refused to speak to reporters after the team’s 114-106 loss to the Warriors on Sunday night, citing fines he recently received for swearing during his postgame interviews.

He doesn’t want to be fined again, and he probably would be cursing after the way he played in the fourth quarter. (It should be noted that players also face fines if they contractually refuse to give post-match interviews when asked to do so.)

Edwards forced a series of shots in the fourth quarter and was 1-for-7 with two turnovers, or as coach Chris Finch put it, “just one hero shot after another.”

But when Julius Randle spoke and asked a question about the team’s offense late in the game, Edwards had a few words for the recorders and cameras.

“I just…have to play better,” Edwards said. “I have to find my teammates when they give me three or four. Terrible for me.”

Edwards (27 points, six assists, six turnovers) wasn’t the only one who had to admit mistakes on Sunday night, especially when the Wolves allowed 44 points in the third quarter. The defense that had helped them to a four-game winning streak disappeared as Golden State picked up the tempo, even after makes and turnovers. Stephen Curry scored 30 points for them, while Buddy Hield took advantage of poor transition defense and scored 27 points with seven three-pointers.

“There’s usually a point in the game where you lose the game,” Finch said. “But this game had two. The third quarter began first. They had, I think, 10 transition baskets in the first five or six minutes, and a lot of them came after we scored, which is inexcusable. We did a really good job with our half-court defense. They decided they needed to pick up the pace and we didn’t answer the bell.”

The Wolves lost a 58-49 halftime lead thanks to a 44-32 third quarter scoreline, then fell behind by 11 in the fourth quarter before storming back to a 106-105 lead. Nickeil Alexander-Walker (19 points, 7-for-9 shooting) had 10 points during a 15-3 Wolves run, and Edwards gave the Wolves the lead with a three-pointer with 4:47 to play. The Wolves didn’t score again from then on as Edwards forced shot after shot. Finch opted not to reinstate point guard Mike Conley because Alexander-Walker had played so well, but the Wolves’ offense disintegrated.
