The Syrian rebels’ takeover will have a “remarkable” domino effect comparable to that of the Berlin Wall, a Republican Party official predicts

A rebel group has overthrown the long-time Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assadmarking a monumental turning point in the nearly 14-year civil war.

The takeover that forced Assad to flee the country could have “remarkable” repercussions in the Middle East, rivaling those that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall, according to a Republican lawmaker.

“This is so significant. The fall of the Assad dictatorship. The impact of this will just be remarkable,” Rep. Joe Wilson, R-R-S.C., said on “Fox Report” Sunday. “It is really comparable to the Berlin Wall, which led to dozens of countries being liberated after 50 years of occupation and totalitarian control.”

Bashar al-Assad fled Syria after rebels stormed the capital Damascus on Saturday. Assad, whose government repeatedly used chemical weapons against its residents, reportedly fled with his wife and children.

President Biden said during a speech on Sunday that the United States had no confirmation of Assad’s whereabouts, noting that “there are rumors that he is in Moscow.”

Wilson argued that Israel’s success in weakening Iran and its proxies, as well as Ukraine’s “weakening” of Russia, led to the developments in Syria. He predicted that this “will have a dramatic impact on war criminal Putin’s ability to assert his capabilities.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday highlighted the fall of the Assad regime, saying it was a “direct result” of Israel’s attacks on Iran and Hezbollah. At the same time, he noted that the situation as a whole was “fraught with considerable danger.”

The overthrow of the Assad regime is a “moment of historic opportunity” for the Syrian people, says Biden

A coalition of mostly radical Islamist groups has toppled the Iranian-backed Assad regime. The US-designated terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)The Islamist former al-Qaeda affiliate, part of the rebel forces, played the crucial role in ousting Assad, who assumed the presidency in 2000 after the death of his father Hafez Assad.

“And finally, we will remain vigilant. Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that toppled Assad have their own dismal record of terrorism and human rights abuses. We have noted the recent statements from the leaders of these rebel groups.” “And they are saying the right things now, but as they take more responsibility, we will evaluate not only their words but also their actions,” Biden continued on Sunday.

The president explained that after Assad’s departure, the U.S. will support neighboring countries – such as Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Israel – in the face of Syria’s rebel forces “should a threat emerge from Syria during this transition period.” Biden said these efforts would include meetings with senior administration officials world leaders, and the president will also speak directly with leaders of neighboring countries.

Faced with the question of how to govern the Middle East country after the rebel takeover, Rep. Wilson believed that the Syrian people “as a diaspora will push for a free and democratic Syria.”
