Itch.io is currently offline due to a “Trash AI-powered” phishing report

Indie game storefront Itch.io is currently offline due to a fake phishing report. While the game store’s servers are still online, the website’s domain currently points to IP addresses that do not belong to itch.io – making it inaccessible to most people.

Although the controversial page has been removed, itch.io’s domain registrar, iwantmyname, has still disabled the domain, likely due to automated systems. According to a post on X, the indie games marketplace is now waiting for the domain registrar to respond and reactivate its domain.

In the meantime, if you know how to optimize your hosts file, which maps hostnames to IP addresses, you can use the IP address 45.33.107.166, but you will need to remove the entry once the domain is restored. Itch.io hopes that the issues will be resolved within a few hours so that a new domain name does not have to be provisioned instead.

The domain issues come just days after itch.io began allowing its users to use its domain name for Bluesky accounts. If you’ve spent $10 on the platform, you’ll have the option to use your itch.io profile URL on Bluesky, but the current domain issues mean anyone going to the itch.io custom URLs until then Bluesky receives the error message “Invalid Handle”. The main domain itch.io is online again.
