3 dead after recent high school graduate crashes Cybertruck into wall

A driver of a Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck and three other young passengers crashed on a quiet street in the early hours of Wednesday, killing three people and injuring another.

According to Piedmont police, the truck driver jumped over the concrete curb and crashed into the concrete wall. Photos taken at the scene show how the truck was crushed between the wall and a tree.

According to the scene of the collision, the driver was traveling west on Hampton Road toward downtown and approaching King Avenue. The house on the corner where the collision occurred is across the street from Crocker Park, a popular dog park.

Early reports from other news outlets indicate that the driver and passengers in the truck were 2023 graduates of Piedmont High, a public school a mile from the accident scene.

According to Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers, the accident occurred just after 3 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene a few minutes later, the truck was on fire and they had to use fire extinguishers. The fire was too hot and they had to wait for the fire department to arrive.

Authorities also said speeding may have contributed to the accident.

A communications officer with the Piedmont Police Department told The Oaklandside that the speed limit on the road where the collision occurred was 25 miles per hour, which is also the highest permitted speed limit in the small town.

“We don’t have any serious collisions here because the roads are narrow and people don’t build up speed,” the official said. City road planners have recently highlighted the need to build narrower streets to reduce collisions everywhere.

Deaths from collisions are rare in Piedmont; the last one was 38 years ago, police said.

The California Highway Patrol will investigate the cause of the collision. Piedmont maintains a legal partnership with the state agency in these types of collisions.

According to a post on Nextdoor, the teens involved had just left a party at one of their parents’ house. When the truck crashed, a friend of the students behind them stopped, got out and helped pull one of the students out. There is no official report on this student’s condition.

Last year, the Tesla Cybertruck was criticized by auto experts over the safety of its suspension, accelerator pedal and other issues. But because of their stainless steel bodies and apparent toughness, they were marketed primarily as safe vehicles, even as safe-roads advocates and auto experts said they posed a potential danger to pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists.
