Have a big cooldown to start the week

PHOENIX – We are watching a cold front that will cause temperatures to drop after an unseasonably warm start to December!

A low pressure area will carry the cold front through Arizona later Tuesday, dropping daytime highs into the upper 60s by tomorrow.

Although this front will bring cooler air to the state, conditions will remain dry. Along with the cooler air, we expect winds to increase across the state.

A Wind warning takes effect for the Colorado River Valley from 11 a.m. today until 5 p.m. Tuesday. Northerly winds gusting to 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow unsecured items around and down tree branches, potentially causing some power outages.

Such strong winds can make driving particularly difficult for high-profile vehicles and make boating on area lakes dangerous due to choppy conditions.

Along the Rim and in the highlands, wind speeds will increase to 15-20 mph through Tuesday, with gusts up to 25 mph. Higher elevations near the San Francisco Peaks could see winds exceeding 55 mph Tuesday.

While it will be windy in the valley tonight through Tuesday, our winds will only gust up to 20 miles per hour.

Nighttime low temperatures in the Valley will fall into the 30s and 40s, with the coldest morning being Wednesday, when some areas in the Valley could approach the freezing mark.

Freeze clocks will take effect late Tuesday evening through early Wednesday morning for portions of southern and western Arizona, including Casa Grande and Globe. Frost and freezing conditions could destroy crops and other sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

If you live in communities where there is freeze protection, be sure to follow the 4 Ps: Protect people, pets, pipes and plants from the cold.

After the front passes, high pressure returns and pushes the 70s back toward the middle to end of the week.
