The Chiefs are the first team ever to have three different kickers win the game at the last second

When Chiefs kicker Matthew Wright hit a game-winner as time expired against the Chargers on Sunday night, he continued what the Chiefs had done all season: narrowly picking up wins. And the Chiefs did it like no other team in NFL history.

Wright became the third Chiefs kicker to make a game-winning field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter this season. According to OptaSTATS, not only has no other team in NFL history done this with three different kickers in one season, but no other team has done this with only two different kickers in one season.

In Week 2, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker hit a field goal as time expired, giving the Chiefs a 26-25 victory over the Bengals. In Week 12, Chiefs kicker Spencer Shrader hit a 31-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Chiefs a 30-27 victory over the Panthers. And then Wright got his game-winning shot in Week 14 against the Chargers.

The Chiefs would prefer not to have to keep pulling out last-second wins, but they keep finding ways to win, and at 12-1, they’re closing in on the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs and home-court advantage heading into the third Super Bowl in a row. And if there’s a last-second field goal in a playoff game, they might be confident.
