Chelsea star Cole Palmer broke an English Premier League record on Sunday when he scored two penalties in his side’s 4-3 comeback win over Tottenham.

The striker remained cool as he converted two penalties in the second half, taking his tally to 12 penalties in the league without misses. In doing so, he broke the previous record set by Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, who scored 11 penalties in a row, according to Opta.

Palmer broke the record with an audacious “Panenka” penalty in the 84th minute, firing his second shot into the center of the goal – a technique named after the great Czech footballer Antonin Panenka.

“When I put the ball down and took a step back, I knew what I was going to do,” he said after the game. “I thought it was late in the game and it was a little crazy, so I just went for it.”

Palmer, 22, has become one of the best players in the world since leaving Manchester City to join Chelsea in 2023.

He already has 50 goal involvements (33 goals, 17 assists) in 48 league games for his new club, which helped Chelsea climb to second place in the table.

The Englishman didn’t give up against Tottenham and, in addition to his two penalty kicks, also prepared one of his team’s goals.

Palmer broke the league's penalty kick record by taking his second penalty of the game.

However, the game didn’t start well for Chelsea, as hosts Tottenham took advantage of individual mistakes and took a 2-0 lead after just 11 minutes.

But Chelsea stayed calm and halved the deficit after 17 minutes thanks to a fine strike from Jadon Sancho.

Just after the hour, Palmer equalized, converting a penalty after Yves Bissouma lunged to knock Moises Caicedo to the ground in the penalty area.

The game then picked up pace and Chelsea scored the go-ahead in the 73rd minute with a goal from Enzo Fernández. While the Argentine midfielder finished, Palmer had the chance to deal with several defenders before the ball passed through to Fernández.

Palmer’s cheeky penalty made it 4-2 just before Son Heung-min scored a consolation goal for Tottenham in the final seconds.

The win means Chelsea are now just four points behind leaders Liverpool, but the Londoners still have a game to play.

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has played down the possibility of his side being in the title race this season, with the team still in the early stages of rebuilding.

“After the game, my message to the players was to focus on the next game, day by day, because if you start thinking about where we are in three or four games, it’s completely wrong,” he said.

“Enjoy the day off with family and friends and when we come back, go back to 100%, train well, prepare for the next game and improve day by day.”
