David Coote: Premier League referee sacked for ‘serious offence’

Premier League referee David Coote has been sacked, PGMOL said on Monday, citing a “serious breach” of his contract.

Coote was investigated after a video was leaked showing him in a rant about Liverpool and their former coach Jürgen Klopp.

He is also being investigated by UEFA after a video published by The Sun allegedly showed him snorting a white powder while on duty at Euro 2024.

“Following the completion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL was terminated today with immediate effect,” PGMOL said in a statement.

“David Coote’s actions constituted a serious breach of the terms of his employment contract and his position was deemed untenable.

“David Coote’s support remains important to us and we remain committed to his well-being.”

“David Coote has the right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment.”

Coote is also being investigated by the English Football Association (FA) after he allegedly discussed handing out a yellow card before a game.

The investigation relates to a game between Leeds United and West Bromich Albion in October 2019. Coote threw out Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski during the game. There is no indication that there was an error in the issuance of the card.
