Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles responds to Jay-Z’s rape accusation on Instagram

Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles has apparently spoken out about the new rape allegations against her son-in-law Jay-Z.

Shortly after the rapper (born Shawn Carter) was accused in a civil lawsuit of raping a 13-year-old girl alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs, Knowles, 70, “liked” an Instagram post from ABC 7 Chicago, who shared details about allegations – which Carter has vehemently denied.

The Roc Nation founder, 55, was named in an amended complaint filed Sunday, Dec. 8, as a defendant in the lawsuit originally filed against Combs in October. A woman who identified herself only as Jane Doe said Carter and Combs raped her at an afterparty for the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000 while a third, unnamed female celebrity looked on.

The Instagram post Knowles liked included a photo of Carter and Combs with the words, “Breaking News: Jay-Z and Diddy named in lawsuit over alleged rape of 13-year-old girl.” Her like remained as of 1:30 p.m ET pass.

Carter married Knowles’ daughter Beyoncé in 2008 and the couple share daughter Blue Ivy, 12, and twins Rumi and Sir, 7.

A representative for Knowles did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Shortly after the amended complaint was filed in New York, Carter responded on the “These allegations and public scrutiny would lead me to settle.”

The star also referenced his family with Beyoncé, saying the allegations and subsequent headlines would be difficult for his children, especially Blue Ivy.

“My only sorrow is for my family. “My wife and I will have to sit down with our children, one of whom is of the age when their friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims and explain the cruelty and greed of young people,” he wrote. “I mourn another loss of my innocence. Children shouldn’t have to endure something like this at a young age. It is unfair to have to try to understand the inexplicable extent of the evil that seeks to destroy families and the human spirit.”

He continued, “These allegations are so heinous that I am asking you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil complaint!! Whoever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked up, don’t you agree? If that were the case, these alleged victims deserved real justice… You made a terrible error in judgment by thinking all “celebrities” were the same. I don’t come from your world. I’m a young man who made it out of Project Brooklyn. We don’t play games like that. We have very strict rules of conduct and honor. We protect children, you seem to exploit people for personal gain. Only your network of conspiracy theorists, fake physicists, will believe the idiotic claims you have made against me, which would be ridiculous without the seriousness of harming children.

When the lawsuit was first filed in October, only Combs was named as a defendant, and his lawyers have denied the allegations, calling the suit an “extortion attempt.” At that time, the names of two other celebrities – Carter and the unnamed female star – were redacted.

Jane Doe claims in the lawsuit that she tried to enter the VMAs in New York City on the night of the attack, standing outside the venue and approaching limousines trying to take guests inside. The lawsuit alleges a limo driver said he worked for Combs and invited her to an afterparty.

The woman was reportedly asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement upon arriving at a dorm for the afterparty and was later drugged after being served a drink. The lawsuit says she was “held down by Carter as he vaginally raped her while Combs and Celebrity B watched.” After Carter finished, he stepped back toward the wall. Combs then stepped forward and vaginally raped plaintiff while Carter and Celebrity B watched.”

Combs is currently behind bars on racketeering and sex trafficking charges and is scheduled for trial in May 2025.
