In an extraordinary sequence of events at Anfield, both Kylian Mbappé and Mohamed Salah missed both penalties in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Kylian Mbappé was first to score the away team’s penalty in the 61st minute, with Real already trailing 1-0 thanks to Alexis Mac Allister’s Liverpool opener. However, the Frenchman did not look confident as he approached the penalty spot and appeared completely disheartened after his side-footed shot was saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The roar of the home crowd that greeted Kelleher grew even louder when Liverpool were awarded a penalty moments later after Ferland Mendy conceded a penalty and brought down Salah after some great footwork from the Egyptian.

However, the 32-year-old striker, whose comments after the game on Sunday caused heated debate in the media, surprisingly missed the target with his penalty and, to the astonishment of all fans, shot the ball onto the left-hand post at Anfield Road.

Luckily for Salah, his Liverpool team were still able to secure all three points at the end of the evening, as Cody Gakpo’s powerful header in the 76th minute secured the Reds a 2-0 win.

The result marked Liverpool’s first Champions League triumph over Real Madrid for the first time in eight games in 15 years and continues their perfect record in the competition this season, having won all five Champions League games so far, giving them remains at the top of the league stage leaderboard.

Meanwhile, Mbappe’s missed penalty tonight meant his rocky start to life as a Galactico this season suffered another unfortunate turn. The 25-year-old has scored nine goals in 18 games in all competitions since arriving on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, but has still struggled to win over all his critics in his first few months in the Spanish capital.

As for his Real Madrid team, the reigning European champions are currently in a precarious position in the Champions League rankings for the league phase, sitting in 24th place, just above the elimination places, with today’s defeat being their third defeat in his five games in this competition this season.
