Panthers rookie RB Jonathon Brooks tears his ACL in his knee for the second time in a row

Three weeks after returning from a torn cruciate ligament, Jonathon Brooks injured his knee again.

The Carolina Panthers’ rookie running back slipped to the turf with a non-contact knee injury during Sunday’s 22-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and limped to the sideline. On Monday, the team announced that Brooks had torn the ACL in his right knee.

The injury is a blow to the promising rookie, who the Panthers selected in the second round of April’s draft out of Texas.

The injury occurred in the first quarter when the game ended scoreless. Brooks slipped on a cut on the grass and was in significant pain. He tried to walk to the sideline but fell again before he made it.

Brooks was one of the best running backs in college football at Texas and was considered a potential first-round pick. He tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee in November of last season and was traded to the Panthers in the second round (No. 46). Despite his injury, he was still the first running back off the board in the draft.

Brooks missed Carolina’s first 10 games while recovering from his injury before making his NFL debut in Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs. He ran eight times for 25 yards in two games, supporting Chuba Hubbard. Now, three games after his pro debut, Brooks faces another extended absence.

With Brooks injured, Hubbard will once again take over Bell’s role as Carolina’s running back.
