KU is suffering a major decline due to shootings

Creighton disrupted KU’s offensive rhythm last week with a defensive plan that relied on outsmarting Dajuan Harris Jr. and KJ Adams and challenging those two to shoot. Against Mizzou, the Jayhawks struggled more with turnovers — a season-high 22 — but there were some similarities in both games. This offseason, Bill Self has prioritized outside shooting to create more space around Hunter Dickinson and make it easier to score in the paint.

There was a big difference in KU’s 3-point shooting, but scoring from inside the arc was fairly consistent in its 7-0 start. But during this two-game skid, KU has struggled to make shots in the zone – 26 of 63 (39.7 percent) – with the defense prioritizing eliminating them. KU also struggled to get to the free throw line, outscoring 40-14 in the two games.

According to KenPom, KU ranks 361st nationally in free throw percentage. For a team that doesn’t take a lot of threes, that’s a staggering number. The Jayhawks have two home games they should win – NC State and Brown – to help them get their offense ready in time for conference play. — CJ Moore, college basketball writer

UCLA on the rise thanks to defense

UCLA picked up one of its biggest wins of the week on Sunday, handing Oregon its first loss of the season with a 73-71 road win. This team wins in classic Mick Cronin style. Since 2010, Cronin has only had two sub-50 defenses, with last season being one of them. This year, the Bruins rank fourth in adjusted defensive efficiency by KenPom. They overwhelm their opponents with 27 percent of their possessions – the second-best team in the country – and have quietly continued to win stunning games and climb the computer rankings until Sunday. Since losing to New Mexico on Nov. 8, UCLA is the seventh-best team in college basketball, according to Bart Torvik’s sorting tool. — Moore
