Sean McDermott reveals costly substitution mistake that sealed Bills’ loss to Rams

The Buffalo Bills suffered a tough loss on Sunday, losing 44-42 to the Los Angeles Rams despite Josh Allen setting an NFL record three rushing and three passing touchdowns. The last two minutes of the game were particularly painful for Bills Mafia, as several mistakes caused the team’s already slim chance of victory to plummet.

First, Josh Allen was stuffed at the goal line with a quarterback sneak with a minute left and the Bills were down two points. The play call (and failure to score) forced them into a timeout, which led the Bills to attempt an onside kick – a completely avoidable scenario if Buffalo had simply opted for a pass play call instead.

The Bills, of course, fell victim to the numbers and failed to recover the onside kick. The Rams ran three plays to force Buffalo to use the last remaining timeouts and faced a fourth down with seven seconds on the clock. Los Angeles decided to punt to waste the final moments of the contest and did so successfully, with punter Ethan Evans executing a high kick that bled out the clock.

Before the punt, however, the Bills confused everyone one last time by seemingly lining up in a standard return formation instead of doing everything they could to block the kick, which at that point was their only chance to win the game.

Sean McDermott was then asked why his team didn’t go for the block and win. He revealed the costly substitution error that sealed the Bills’ fate: Buffalo failed to get eleven players on the field on the final play of the game.

It turned out that the Bills only had nine players attempting to block the punt. While it doesn’t explain why those players didn’t try to block the punt anyway, it does illuminate the disastrous final moments of Buffalo’s loss. With the game on the line, the team failed to even get a full session on the pitch.

It’s a difficult decision for the Bills in every way.
