Big day for the Big 12 as West Virginia beats Gonzaga and five others win

Although the Big 12 Conference has suffered many setbacks in terms of its position in the College Football Playoff, there is no doubt that it is the No. 1 seed in college basketball.

The league posted six wins in six games on Wednesday, none bigger than West Virginia’s 86-78 overtime win over No. 3 Gonzaga.

Fifth-seeded Iowa State, No. 17 Cincinnati, 17th-seeded Baylor, No. 24 Arizona and UCF also won, while sixth-seeded Houston battled Notre Dame well past midnight in the Players Era Festival Impact Tournament.

Darian DeVries, who led Drake to incredible success, appears to have the Mountaineers (4-1) well on their way. Tucker DeVries, Darian’s son and former Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, sank two free throws to make it 71-1 and force overtime.

From then on it was all WVU as they outscored the Zags 15-7 in the extra session. Javon Small scored 31 points with seven rebounds and drained four 3-pointers, while Amani Hansberry scored 19 and DeVries 16.

West Virginia sank 11 three-pointers and had a 42-36 lead.

While West Virginia advanced to the Battle 4 Atlantis, fifth-seeded Iowa State secured fifth place at the Maui Invitational with a 99-71 victory over Colorado. The Buffaloes, ironically also part of the Big 12, had defeated two-time defending champion Connecticut and advanced.

Milan Momcilovic scored 24 points with six made 3-pointers, while Curtis Jones added 19 and Keshon Gilbert 15.

Iowa State, always known for its forceful defense under head coach TJ Otzelberger, continues to be at the top of the scoreboard. They have reached the 81-point mark in all six games this season.

Cincinnati, Baylor and Arizona all picked up wins over smaller schools, with the Bearcats defeating Alabama State 77-59, the Bears defeating New Orleans 91-60 and the Wildcats defeating Davidson 104-71.

UCF earned an 84-76 decision against Milwaukee.
