Police identify Luigi Mangione as a “strong individual involved in the assassination of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.”

CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot outside New York’s Hilton Midtown around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday as he was on his way to speak at UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference.

Police said the gunman appeared to be waiting for his target in what New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called a “premeditated, pre-planned targeted attack.”

The masked gunman approached Thompson from behind and shot him at least once in the back and once in the right calf. Police said the words “deny,” “delay” and “depose” were written on the shell casings found at the scene.

The shooter fled on foot and then by bicycle into Central Park, the New York police said. The last video of the suspected shooter was in a bus depot in Upper Manhattan.

Investigators found a gray bag in Central Park and examined whether it was the suspected shooter’s bag. A jacket and some Monopoly money were found in the bag, two senior law enforcement sources said.

Three senior law enforcement officials familiar with the case said police believe the gunman traveled to New York City on a Greyhound bus last month. The bus departed from Atlanta. While in New York, the shooter stayed in a hostel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
