Chris Evans returns to the MCU to join Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans is returning to the MCU to join Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday, The Wrap reports. It is unknown whether he will return as Captain America, in the role he played for nearly a decade in the MCU, or in some other capacity.

IGN has reached out to Evans and Disney reps for confirmation.

Evans’ last appearance as Captain America was in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which seemingly brought the character’s arc to a close. But Downey Jr.’s shocking return as Doctor Doom, confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, has apparently opened all sorts of doors within the MCU.

Spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine

Of note, Evans made a brief appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine earlier this year, although not as Captain America. Instead, he briefly reprized his role as Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four films and was subsequently killed by Cassandra Nova.

No more spoilers

Evans and Downey Jr. aren’t the only MCU veterans who may be on hand for Doomsday. Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of numerous Avengers films as well as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, are also confirmed to direct the new film. Everything points to a big Avengers reunion as Disney looks to recapture some of the energy that made the MCU so dominant in the 2010s.

“Avengers: Doomsday” won’t be released until May 1, 2026, so it’s still a long way off. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios is preparing for the release of Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for release on February 14, 2025. Our full list of upcoming Marvel TV shows and movies can be found here.
